Slum Education Program

The centre has been running a well-organized literacy programme for urban-slum children. The city centre has a large neighbourhood slum with sizeable population with very poor people who have been our patrons of our medical unit.

The children in many of these houses are first time school goers and face considerable challenge in education as they face repeated failures due to lack of good model to emulate, lack economic resources, lack of encouragement, poor motivation, lack of initiative, etc.

Pathway decided to help these children in their education by providing well -evolved educational support and stimulation and also by imparting literacy programme for these children. Most of these children attend the Government run Corporation schools. It is found that all these children need that extra support to complete theirĀ  every day assignments, lessons and understand their lessons well.

This program has been successful as more than 110 children, both boys and girls attend this program everyday. The center has been able to identify and employ the right kind of teachers to help these children in their learning. It is heartening to note that some of these children such as Madhavan, Krishnan and Babu have done quite well in their recently held 10th standard exams.

All these children have passed their exams with more than 65% in their aggregate, placing them in first class. Over these years many children have shown considerable progress in their performance in their 10th and 12th grade exams, particularly in Mathematics, English. This programme has helped particularly girl children from the slums whose parents are now able to realize the potential of their children as well as able to see that girls also have equal rights.
